Plan Ahead to Make Moving Easier
Packing isn't the only important consideration when you're getting ready to move to a new home. Long before moving day arrives, it's important to make a to-do list of the important tasks that you need to take care of prior to relocation. Once you know everything you need to do in advance of moving day, you can start tackling the necessary tasks in a systematic and organized fashion. When moving day arrives, you'll be very happy to have gotten many of the most difficult tasks out of the way.
The last thing you want to do is move dirty furniture into your brand new home. You also don't want to leave behind a mess when you move out. If you're renting, you lease probably specifies that your unit needs to be clean when you vacate the premises. If you have sold your home, or if is still up for sale, leaving behind a clean home is certainly something you need to do.
Before moving day, you should either hire professional furniture and house cleaners, or set aside a nice chunk of time to give everything in the house a thorough cleaning on your own. By taking care of this ahead of time, you'll be able to focus on heading out to your new home as quickly as possible on the day of your move.
If you need to take care of any property repairs, it's a good idea to get started on them right away. Don't put off all the repairs until the last minute. Instead, leave yourself plenty of time to take care of the tasks around your house that need to be completed before you move out. If you wait until the last minute, you could find yourself running out of time. Failure to take care of need repairs properly can keep renters from getting back their security deposit money and can keep homeowners from attracting buyers to the property.
Insurance for the Move
Many people find out too late that their belongings are not properly insured while in transit. While most moving companies do offer standard insurance coverage for the removals process, this type of coverage is not always sufficient. If you have very valuable or delicate items to be moved, you might want to add additional insurance coverage. Make sure that you understand the terms and conditions of the insurance coverage you have. You don't want any nasty surprises related to taxes or replacement cost if you need to file a claim against your removals insurance coverage.
Move In Considerations
You don't want to arrive at your new home to discover that you have no electricity or running water. Make sure you have made all of the necessary utility arrangements ahead of time, so that you won't have to worry about whether or not things will be in order when you arrive at your new home. In addition to making sure you have water and power, it's also important to make sure you have a way to gain entrance to your new home. Make sure you get a key from your landlord if you are renting, or from the sellers if you're buying.
When all of these issues and considerations are handled well in advance of moving day, you won't have to worry about cramming several weeks worth of moving activities into a few short days. You're move will be much less stressful if you take care of the details ahead of time.
